Born at the end of the seventies, Mario Schambon emigrated with his family to the US just as tensions were ramping up in Escobar era Colombia. As an immigrant, he has dedicated his life to navigating the dualities of language and social paradigms Latinx immigrants face in the US. His experiences culminate in an artist whose work explores boundaries and relationships through music, food, objects, performance and collaborations.
Mario Schambon has had the honor of working and/or performing with many distinguished artists including Damo Suzuki, Sonia Sanchez, Bettye Saar, Yukinori Yanagi, Bradford Cox (Atlas Sound, Deerhunter), Mike Khoury, Leyya Tawil (Dance Elixir), William Downs and Roberto C. Lange ( Helado Negro).
His installations have highlighted the injustice of slavery on Jekyll Island, illuminated and activated architectural spaces in New Orleans and Toronto , entertained concertgoers at Bonnaroo, and have become regarded elements in the public parks of Roswell GA.
His artistic mission is to activate abandoned or otherwise mundane spaces using repurposed or recycled materials, sound and media in unexpected ways. In 2008 he was awarded the Wanderer Memorial commission furthering his interest in social justice. His newest project, Campos de Luz (Fields of Light), is a musical vehicle for story telling and social commentary informed by his Colombian origins. The self titled album"Campos de Luz" released on Imaginator Records in October of 2019.
