MACULELE. 2009
Lathe, fluorescent lighting, steel, video
420 in. x 180 in. x 94in.
Maculele is a Brazilian stick fighting dance from Bahia. The shapes of the combatants in their dance informed this disruptive architectural study. Maculele was created on site at the American Institute of Architects in New Orleans for the Descour Festival using reclaimed building materials salvaged in the wake of Katrina and incorporates ideas developed in an earlier work, FIAT LUX.
It is a tribute to the fighting spirit that bolstered New Orleans after the storm.
