Tripas (Calavera, Giants Feet, Chili Putti, Face Bats) 2009
4 brass samovars, chocolate, chilis, leather, photo prints, styrofoam, wire, thread,
cardboard, goldleaf, resin, animal caldos
Dimensions Variable
An expanded installation that traveled from Eyedrum in Atlanta, GA to Tempus Projects in Tampa, FL
This marks the first time food became another direction of exploration in my work. The samovars were originally on hotplates and contained beef, shrimp, mushroom and pork caldos (broths) representing the 4 humors : Blood, Yellow Bile, Black Bile, Phlegm.
All of the objects corresponded to the whimsical transformations happening within the gut: the chocolate putti and face bats products of the dissolved skull and bound feet of a giant trapped within, a digestive alchemy with fragrant results.
The "skull" is also dotted with dung balls in a nod to Chris Ofili, furthering the associations with internal processes of the body, fertility, and decolonization
